Independence Square: local identity and contested evidence

The plaque at Charlotte’s Independence Square connects the city center to Mecklenburg County’s Revolutionary-era identity. Commemoration here is closely associated with the claimed Mecklenburg Declaration of May 20, 1775, a date that has become prominent in North Carolina’s public symbolism.

The declaration’s authenticity remains disputed. NCpedia distinguishes the later accounts of a May 20 declaration from the documented Mecklenburg Resolves of May 31, 1775. The photograph is therefore an opportunity to discuss how local traditions, historical evidence and civic pride interact. The existence of a plaque proves that a story was commemorated, rather than resolving the debate over the underlying document.
