The Hollywood sign: from real-estate promotion to cultural symbol
The hillside letters began in 1923 as an advertisement for the Hollywoodland housing development. Their original purpose was commercial: they promoted property rather than serving as an official monument to filmmaking. Over time, the shortened Hollywood name acquired a much wider association with cinema, celebrity and ambition.
The sign has also required preservation. The present structure dates from the 1978 rebuilding campaign, showing that a landmark’s recognizable image can outlast its original materials. This photograph captures both a Los Angeles landscape and a symbol whose meaning was transformed by the entertainment industry and the public imagination.
